Safety First
At Crystal South Surf Camp safety is priority one. All staff are trained
and certified in first aid, life saving, water rescue, and CPR. We are
particularly aware of our added responsibility with small children and we take it
seriously. We have safely and successfully taught hundreds of children of all ages
to surf.

We focus on safety and the rules of the water during actual instruction hours. Surfing
is more than just physical ability; a good surfer is a safe surfer. You will learn
the rules of thumb to keep you surfing safely long after you leave our camp.

Jo Pickett
Jo Pickett's surfing career began when she paddled out at Crystal Pier in the summer of 1975 in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Jo and her family still embody this enduring tradition of surfing at Crystal Pier and sharing the love through teaching the art and skill of surfing. A mother to three gifted children who
also love to surf, when she's not in the water, she's a personal trainer at
O2 Fitness Club and teaches yoga at
Seaside Yoga.
Jo's surfed all over the East Coast at breaks like Wrightsville Beach, Cape Hatteras, and Florida. She's also surfed her fair share of West Coast and
exotic breaks in California, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Tortola, and Hawaii. Jo surfs
both long and short boards. But, if the waves are big, shortboarding is the choice.
Jo has a powerful bottom turn, a hard snap off the top, and pulls off giant floaters.
A skillful tube rider who can also cross step a long board to the nose with finesse,
Jo has competed in surf contests in many locations and is very familiar with how
to compete, have fun and still win.
Her surf camps focus on
safety
and fun. She possesses the experience, knowledge, and skills to instruct willing
students all the way to competition-level surfing.

Leilani Pickett

Competitive Highlights
Crystal South Surf Camp exists because of Leilani. From the time she could walk, she insisted on surfing. We obliged, and our method evolved. Leilani's competitive record stands as testament to her surfing prowess. Leilani's students learn from her words of encouragement as she coaxes them into waves, and, most of all, from her demonstrations of maneuvers. Leilani surfs with finesse and grace which edifies her radical style.
Doug Pickett

Doug Pickett has been surfing for 10 years and he's only 14.
